CDS Exam 2025 – Complete Guide in Simple Words

Introduction

The CDS (Combined Defence Services) Exam is one of the most important exams in India for joining the Army, Navy, and Air Force. It is conducted by the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) twice every year.

1. Who Can Apply for CDS? (Eligibility)

A. Nationality

  • You must be a citizen of India.

Different academies have different age limits:

  • IMA: 19–24 years
  • INA: 19–22 years
  • AFA: 19–23 years
  • OTA: 19–25 years

C. Education

  • IMA & OTA: Any graduate from a recognized university
  • INA: Engineering graduate or equivalent
  • AFA: Bachelor’s degree with Physics and Maths at 10+2 level

D. Marital Status

  • Mostly, candidates should be unmarried for academies like IMA, INA, and AFA

2. CDS Exam Pattern 2025

CDS exam is offline (pen-paper) and has objective questions. There are 3 papers depending on the academy you choose.

A. English

B. General Knowledge (GK)

  • History: Indian freedom struggle, ancient and medieval India

4. CDS Selection Process

The selection has 4 main stages:

Step 1: Written Exam

  • Marks obtained in the written test are very important.
  • Only those who pass the written exam are called for SSB.

Step 2: SSB Interview (Personality Test)

  • Stage 1: Screening test (PPDT – Picture Perception & Discussion Test)
  • Stage 2: Main SSB tests including GTO (Group Tasks), psychological tests, personal interview

Step 3: Medical Examination

  • Candidates must pass a medical test to ensure they are fit for the armed forces

Step 4: Final Merit List

  • Merit is calculated using written exam + SSB marks
  • Candidates are selected according to vacancy and merit
